Rubem Alves is a theologian who discovered poetry, the language of what it is not possible to say, the language in which we must speak to God, and that changed his life. Suddenly, like Lewis Carroll's Alice, he found himself going through the looking glass and discovering how words cannot be marshalled into conventional lectures but are more like wild birds flapping their wings and refusing be caged.
