Spiritual resistance in the Vilna Ghetto

Poses questions about armed resistance against the Nazis vs. spiritual resistance. Concludes that the former was not possible for the majority but that the latter was a life-affirming force that enabled Jews to pursue anti-Nazi goals and to create models of caring and creating in the Vilna ghetto. Discusses the topics of culture (including music and education), health care, the library and reading trends, the museum, the archives, assocations (including the literary and artistic union), science, the YIVO Institute, theater, sport, social assistance, religion and tradition. Questions whether the Judenrat (headed by Jacob Gens), which coordinated many of the spiritual resistance activities, merely cooperated with the Nazis when necessary or actually helped the Nazis, without drawing a conclusion.
