When it comes to Bible translations, readability and reliability are what count; and on both counts, the original THE JERUSALEM BIBLE (published in 1966) was the first truly modern Bible for Catholics. This new Reader's edition of the complete Bible in modern English uses thw text from the Standard edition of the Jerusalem Bible. In this new edition for popular use the comprehensive introductions and annotation of the Standard edition have been replaced by brief introductions to indicate the historical setting of each book, and a small number of short footnotes to clarify only the literal meaning of the text without attempting interpretation.
