Harold Fry is dull old man who believes he's had no impact on anyone and is happy in his routine, even though it seems that his wife has begun to resent him. Then he unexpectedly receives a letter from an old colleague - Miss Queenie Hennessy, whom he once reassured in tough times. His little act of kindness has stuck with this woman. Harold has no idea how to reply to Queenie, so on his journey to the nearest post box, he passes it by and decided to keeps on walking until he reaches her.

As wonderful a tale as it is, Rachel Joyce tells it with just the pinch of salt it needs. People in the world can be kind, even if life isn't.
