Clio Oliver, born in Shanghai between the wars to a life of cloistered wealth and self-indulgence, has learned a great deal about sensuality and obedience, but nothing about love- or loneliness- until her grandfather's death summons her to England where she encounters the rest of her feuding family for the first time.
